Our teen and youth Sail Camp summer programmes and Quaystage Adventure land based activities provide the young people who participate with a safe adventurous learning environment to explore and discover themselves, but also to learn about the true value of teamwork, and the importance of our oceans and ecosystems that support it.

Are you a leader who can lead by example? Can you teach and show patience in a learning environment?

Working with young people is sometimes challenging, but exceedingly rewarding. If you work with us, you not only develop yourself, but maybe you’ll create a legacy that could change lives.

Are you what we are looking for?

Our Career Opportunities

We are currently looking to fill the following positions for summer 2023 (and ongoing):

SKIPPER...

Role Description

The role of a Quaystage Sail Camp Skipper is of the utmost importance to the success of each Sail Camp. The position is fun and high paced, but also carries an enormous amount of responsibility. It is not to be underestimated as just ‘being in charge’ or navigating the vessel. Our skippers are primarily responsible for the safety of the young people participating, and work closely with the other staff on board to oversee everything from cooking and cleaning, supervising activities and duty evenings, to team-building and instructing the training provided. Our staff live aboard the vessels full time and so must be used to living and working in close quarters with limited personal space and privacy. The role is diverse and not limited to “just” driving the yacht. One minute you could be planning the next leg of the trip, then teaching knots and splices to a group of Sail Campers. The attitude “but I’m the Skipper” simply does not fit in at our Sail Camps, where all members of staff and crew work together to create an unforgettable life-changing adventure.

Preferred Qualifications / Experience

  • RYA Yachtmaster commercially endorsed (Cruising Instructor or YMI desirable)
  • Considerable documented experience skippering a vessel of 40 ft
  • Capable of teaching to the standards of RYA cruising scheme (instructor certification a bonus but not required)
  • Be familiar with yacht systems and basic maintenance on diesel engines and electronics
  • Experience working with teenagers, and in possession of a DBS or willing to undergo a DBS check
  • Be so confident in their own boat handling and instructional abilities that they can let the students take the helm and learn by doing
  • Be fit and healthy and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment
MATE/SUPPORT STAFF...

Role Description

While our Skippers  typically serve as the primary sailing instructor, we also have a team of support staff who will serve as Mates and assistant instructors on board our vessels. In addition to assisting with teaching and boat operations, Mate will also teach and supervise our other water sports (kayaking, SUPs, swimming, snorkelling) and shore-based activities. Our staff live aboard the vessels full time and so must be used to living and working in close quarters with limited personal space and privacy. At Sail Camp roles are fast-paced and diverse – one minute you could be setting sails or dropping the anchor, the next leading a land activity or supervising dinner preparation.

Preferred Qualifications / Experience

  • Formal sailing instruction experience desirable
  • RYA Day Skipper or proven experience
  • Experience working with teenagers, and in possession of a DBS or willing to undergo a DBS check
  • Experience in outboard engine powered dinghy and/or RIB operation
  • Be fit and healthy and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment
RESIDENT MARINE BIOLOGIST...

Role Description

Marine biology and ecology are part of the core programme delivered by Sail Camps to enable young people on our programmes to engage with and learn about the marine environment. We’re a great place for university students with a science background seeking marine biology employment. Our marine biologists live aboard the vessels and interact with the students on a full time basis. The position includes helping with all aspects of the programme from sailing, cooking and cleaning, running shore excursions in the dinghy and aiding in the facilitation of the team building and leadership training aspects of the programme, as well as delivering our marine science sessions.

Preferred Qualifications / Experience

  • Hold a minimum of a Bachelors degree in marine biology or an associated STEM subject
  • It is desirable but not essential to have sailing experience to a RYA Day Skipper standard
  • It is desirable but not essential to be a PADI Divemaster or equivalent (ideally have a PADI Instructor Certification)
  • Feel comfortable preparing and presenting material to the group
  • Have a love for teaching and be able to bring the subject alive
  • Experience working with teenagers, and in possession of a DBS or willing to undergo a DBS check
  • Be fit and healthy and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment
