Course Content

Essential Navigation and Seamanship is the first RYA Navigational theory course. It provides a great introduction to navigation, seamanship and safety and is perfect for anyone looking to get out and spend time on the water.

This course is run by Quaystage Training through the RYA’s eLearning website, and is supported by Quaystage Training’s instructors to answer any questions that you might have during the course. The Essential Navigation and Seamanship online course can be completed in approximately 8-10 hours at your own pace. It gives an introduction to charts and publications, safety, buoyage, tides, navigation, pilotage, rules of the road, anchoring, weather forecasts and passage planning.

The Essential Navigation and Seamanship course provides the minimum level of navigational knowledge needed to undertake your Duke of Edinburgh Expedition (which is why we offer it for free to those who book to complete their expedition with us!). It is also ideal for those who sail on yachts as crew or are working towards their RYA Competent Crew qualification. The Essential Navigation and Seamanship course also provides a basic understanding of navigation and safety management on board crucial for users of small boats, such as RIBs or dayboats for fishing.
